Subpar Compared to the Top Upright Bikes
By J. Evans
Star Trac is a popular brand that seems to be everywhere, so it comes as a surprise that this bike would disappoint as much as it does.
I've been riding bikes of all sorts for a number of years, and prior to owning this model I owned a LifeCycle for about a decade. When it finally collapsed, I was persuaded by a local fitness retailer to try this bike. Overall, it's been a disappointing experience.
First off, the seat position on this bike is all wrong. I'm 6'3" and adjusting the seat up to the height I need pushes it too far back from the pedals. The result is that I almost feel like I'm riding a recumbent. Second, the pedal resistance feels strange, almost like I'm pedaling against a dead weight. The LifeCycle had a smooth resistance that was challenging without being oppressive. Cranking the resistance on this bike feels more like using a weight machine than riding uphill on an actual bike.
Overall, the bike is attractive, but the construction is somewhat cheap. A clicking developed in the mechanism after about three weeks of use. Additionally, the display assembly has always been loose on the frame. Star Trac basically shrugged and said that this is the way it was made. Hmmm. Kind of like Honda saying their Accords were made to rattle when driven. The seat is relatively comfortable, though the heart-rate monitor doesn't seem to be accurate.
This bike was expensive, but it feels like it should've cost about half what the LifeCycle cost. They must have a great marketing department to have gotten their equipment into 24-hour Fitness, because they certainly didn't sell them on the quality of this bike.
